BYD Atto 1: The Affordable EV Revolution - A First Look (2026)

For years, the narrative surrounding electric vehicles (EVs) has been that they're a luxury, reserved for the affluent. But is this still true? The BYD Atto 1, a compact electric car, is poised to challenge this perception.

The argument that EVs are exclusively for the wealthy may have held some weight in the past. However, in Australia, the landscape has dramatically shifted in the last 12 to 18 months. And with the arrival of cars like the BYD Atto 1, that argument is facing a serious test.

Starting at just $23,990 before on-road costs, the Atto 1 undercuts the price of a Toyota Corolla – a vehicle synonymous with affordability in the Australian market. This isn't a premium SUV or a tech-laden showcase; it's a straightforward, small hatchback designed for the heart of the market, where everyday consumers shop.

I had the opportunity to take the Atto 1 for a brief half-hour test drive from a local BYD dealership. This quick experience provided some initial impressions of a car that could significantly reshape the EV pricing debate.

In such a short time, it's impossible to make definitive judgments. But during the drive, the Atto 1 didn't feel cheap, unpleasant, or as if it was designed solely by cost-cutters.

The front-wheel drive (FWD) setup gives it a slightly nose-heavy feel, yet it remains calm and predictable – exactly what you'd expect from an affordable hatchback.

Choosing FWD makes sense: it's cheaper to manufacture, saves space, and generally improves efficiency. But here's where it gets controversial... some drivers, including myself, still prefer rear-wheel-drive cars for their better balance and more responsive handling through corners. What do you think about this?

Aesthetically, the Atto 1 initially reminded me of a toy Lamborghini Urus. However, I was relieved to find that it didn't feel like a toy inside. The interior doesn't appear to be constructed from leftover plastic either. It's modern, clean, and recognizably BYD, borrowing elements from the Dolphin and Atto 3, but scaled down and simplified.

That's all well and good, but it's also what you'd expect from a car launched in 2026, even a budget-friendly one. The new standard isn't just about having electric windows; it's about whether the car feels comfortable to drive daily.

On suburban roads, the Atto 1 performs like most small EVs. It's quiet and easy to drive, accelerating smoothly from a standstill. This isn't remarkable in 2026; it's simply what electric cars do well.

The base model Atto 1 offers an impressive price, but it lacks some standard features that should be included in any modern car.

These missing features include wireless phone charging, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors, lights on the vanity mirrors, front parking sensors, and power-adjustable seats. Blind spot indicators are also absent, even from the premium model, which is somewhat puzzling.

With a quoted range of only 220 kilometers, the base model is best suited for city driving. The premium model, with its larger 43kWh battery, offers a more reassuring 330 kilometers of range. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is achieved in 9 seconds for the base model and around 11 seconds for the premium. But let's be honest, you're not buying this car for its sporting prowess.

Whether the Atto 1 proves to be a great car or just an adequate one will require more extensive testing. For now, the Atto 1 has demonstrated that a very affordable electric car can feel normal. In a market where people have been told for years that EVs are only for the wealthy, this could be its most disruptive feature.
