One thing I love about Lincoln, Nebraska is the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, which brings arthouse and world cinema to our fair city. But this October, it’s also going to screen a killer lineup of horror films that includes cult classics, foreign gems, and even some family-friendly titles.

If I were to teach a class on film, and I could only choose 7 movies based on different aspects to study, these would be my picks:1. El Sur by Erice (with a focus on characters)2. La Dolce Vita by Fellini, or 2001: A Space Odyssey by Kubrick (with a focus on structure)3. Opening Night by Cassavetes (with a focus on acting)4. Vampyr by Dreyer, or The Turin Horse by Tarr (with a focus visual storytelling)5. Three Colors: Blue by Kieslowski (with a focus on motifs)6. My Dinner with Andre by Malle (with a focus on artistic choices and restraint)7. Das Boot by Petersen (with a focus on immersion)[Gif from 2001: A Space Odyssey, by Stanley Kubrick]

My 10 Best and Worst Films of 2023 As is my annual tradition, I’ve reviewed all the new cinema (or streaming) releases for this year, and put together a rough list of the 10 best and worst films I saw. Unfortunately, one of my main take aways is how fewer films I saw (I estimated 37 new films in total…) Though I don’t tend to do strict resolutions, one for 2024 will be to double-down on high-quality and indie cinema. But for now, here is 2023:Best Films10. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 39. Women Talking8. Wonka7. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning 6. The Fabelmans5. John Wick: Chapter 44. Creed 33. Oppenheimer2. Spider-Man Across The Spiderverse 1. BarbieWorst Films (although as always, I wouldn’t say I particularly hate any of these) 10. The Flash 9. Scream 78. Strays7. Renfield6. Ant-Man: Quantumamia 5. Blue Beetle 4. Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny 3. Fast X 2. Shazam! Fury of the Gods1. Luther: The Fallen Sun

My latest blog post focusing on FURIOSA. I talk about its unique framing device of narration and how that puts it in conversation with the other films in the MAD MAX saga.Enjoy!:

In a movie theater, everyone can hear you squirm.“Alien: Romulus” was loaded with references to other films in the series, from dialogue to visuals to plot points. While big fans of the series might find it fun, it can be a little tiresome.Read my full review on The Feed: https://lnkd.in/gXR8E2PJ #AlienRomulus #AlienAnthology #TheFeed

Greta Gerwig alluded to the risk that Mattel, Inc. had to take to make this movie. They could have made a "Barbie" movie that focused on a safe, expected premise. It could have still starred Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and would have done fine. But it wouldn't have won this award. It won this award because Mattel took a series of calculated risks, including:👉 Letting the film cast Will Ferrell as a boneheaded CEO of the company.👉 Letting the script explore the product's sometimes problematic history, namely its role in driving an unrealistic body image for millions of girls and young women worldwide. 👉 Letting hundreds of brands and businesses "borrow" protected IP including the Barbie logo (fonts, colors, brand names, etc.) without following "brand guidelines" - turning the Barbie movie into a phenomenon rather than a simple brand campaign.👉 And then yeah having an insanely good cast including Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrara, Issa Rae and more. You learn the rules so you can break them. Margot Robbie put it best, "we want to thank the brave individuals at Warners and Mattel for taking an extraordinary risk—literally, like, inventing numbers to justify green lighting this and then standing by it every step of the way."Sometimes you have to make up the justification you're looking for. Bravo to the company and production team.#GoldenGlobes #marketing #branding #Mattel #Barbie #movies
