Instead, they've signed third baseman/first baseman Patrick Wisdom to a minor league contract, according to a report by JustBaseball.com's Aram Leighton. Wisdom, a 34-year-old veteran, has had a rollercoaster journey in the MLB. He signed with the Mariners in 2019 but was released just a year later without making an appearance for the team. Wisdom's career stats include a .209/.291/.459 slash line, 88 home runs, and a .750 OPS over 455 games with the St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and Chicago Cubs. His time with the Cubs from 2021-2023 was particularly impressive, hitting 20-plus homers in three straight seasons, including a career-high 28 in 2021.
However, his most recent season with the Cubs in 2024 was less than stellar, as he struggled to a .171 batting average with eight homers, two triples, seven doubles, and a .629 OPS in 75 games. Wisdom then ventured to the Korean Baseball Organization, where he played for the Kia Tigers in 2025, batting .236 with 35 homers in 119 games. He has primarily played third base (277 games) but has also seen time at first base (83 games).
